Deputies responded to a call for service regarding a kangaroo in Mercedes, Texas about two miles from the ranch it belongs to, according to a Facebook post from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office published on Saturday.
“HSCO deputies and the owner of the kangaroo were able to recover the kangaroo without any incident,” the post reads. “Details on how the kangaroo got loose are still being determined. No injuries or property damage has been reported.”
Kangaroos are legal to own in Texas but according to Pet Helpful, require a large and grassy area to roam and adequate fencing is required to keep them contained, as kangaroos can jump over four feet high and 15 feet in distance, and cannot be house trained and don’t interact well with other species of animals, ideally being in the company of other kangaroos.
