NC trooper, detained driver killed after responding officer crashes into them: NCDPS

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WPDE) — A North Carolina trooper has died after he was struck by his brother responding to help with a traffic stop.

State Highway Patrol said Trooper James Horton lost control of his car when he was approaching the traffic stop and hit his brother, Trooper John Horton.

An investigation revealed Trooper James Horton collided with the stationary patrol car and hit Trooper John Horton and a detained driver standing along the roadside.

The detained driver is identified as Dusty Luke Beck, 26, of South Carolina and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a North Carolina Dept. of Public Safety.

Trooper John Horton was a 15-year veteran assigned to Rutherford County and was taken to Spartanburg hospital where he died from his injures. The detained driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper James Horton was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and has since been released.

Johnson Jr., commander of the State Highway Patrol. “For all involved in this tragic event the coming days will undoubtedly be difficult, but we are committed to stand alongside with them with our thoughts, prayers and unwavering support.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit is assisting with the investigation.
