Details are limited in the death of a former Beaumont mayoral candidate.

Joshua Yates, 34, was reported dead by Beaumont police on Saturday morning.

Just before 7:30 p.m. Friday, officers were called to a welfare check that ended up being a homicide in the 1500 block of Cartwright St, police said.

Officers did not give any indication as to how Yates was killed and in what state he was found.

Yates in 2019 ran unsuccessfully for the mayor’s seat in a five-way race that ultimately led to the re-election of then-Mayor Becky Ames.

The investigation is ongoing.
