Central Freight Lines in Waco shutting down after 96 years

WACO, Texas — Central Freight Lines will be ending their 96 year run in Waco this month, which will leave 2,100 employees without work. 25 News spoke with several workers who said they had no idea this was coming.

One woman who works in sales and wanted to remain anonymous said many found out through an article posted to the Freight Waves website, which is known for posting news specifically about the global freight market.

“None of the upper management had called anybody” she said. “Nobody knew until we saw it on Facebook.”

The article cited too much debt and unpaid bills for the closure and said the company tried “all available options to keep its doors open.” Employees said they were still blindsided by the news.

“We knew there was trouble but didn’t know it was going to happen this soon,” she said. “Like down the road maybe a year or two, but not today. Upper management, they don’t know what they’re doing.”

Central Freight stopped accepting new shipments as of Monday and will finish the deliveries they had by December 20, just days before Christmas.

“The owner is worth 1 billion dollars and almost 2,000 employees are going to laid off by Christmas,” she said. “Our families are not going to be able to have the Christmas they deserve.”

25 News reached out to Central Freight, but they ended the call without comment.
