BISD responds to West Brook cafeteria fight and use of pepper spray to end disturbance

BEAUMONT — BISD – During the final lunch period on December 9, a large fight broke out between students in the West Brook High School cafeteria. After repeated attempts by administrators and police officers to control the situation, an officer deployed pepper spray to diffuse the disturbance. Multiple students, staff and administrators were affected by the spray and have received medical attention to be decontaminated by EMS. Please be aware that students that use bus transportation may be arriving home later than normal, as the campus performed a silent/controlled release to minimize opportunity for student misconduct.

The campus continues to investigate the events that led to the fight in order to ensure that all students involved are disciplined. BISD is utilizing all measures at its disposal to discourage and prevent students from engaging in fighting including additional social emotional instruction and support, parent monitors, increased presence of police officers and security, and criminal charges. The District requires the assistance of parents to discuss and reaffirm the serious consequences that result from fighting at school. Fighting will not be tolerated.
