Update: BPD motorcycle officer out of surgery after he was hit during funeral escort

BEAUMONT — Beaumont Police say a motorcycle officer is out of surgery and in ICU after he was injured when the driver of a pickup truck failed to yield the right of way and struck the officer’s motorcycle during a funeral escort Monday afternoon on College at Pinchback.

The driver of the pickup truck wasn’t hurt.

The officer was providing an escort from the funeral for Father Luong Tran at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica to the cemetery, when the driver struck the officer.

According to Beaumont Police, a preliminary investigation revealed the officer was operating a motorcycle and escorting a funeral procession westbound in the 7000 block of College Street at about 12:15 p.m. Monday. The driver of a red Ford F-150 was traveling south on Pinchback, failed to yield the right of way, and continued south across the westbound lanes of College, causing the collision with the officer operating the motorcycle. The officer was transported to a hospital and sustained serious injuries. The driver of the F-150 wasn’t injured. The crash is under investigation.

“We are asking that you continue to pray,” Ofc. Carole Riley told KFDM/Fox 4 Monday afternoon. “His family is here waiting to see how he does through the day. Again, we are optimistic. It does appear that his injuries will be non-life threatening and we are just thankful.”
