HARRISON COUNTY — The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife are investigating the death of an 11-year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by her father on a Thanksgiving weekend hunting trip.
The girl’s parents agreed to release her name, Daisy Grace Lynn George, 11, a 6th grader from Hallsville.
“The Sheriff is working with the Hallsville ISD superintendent to coordinate grief counselors for all faculty and students affected by this horrible tragedy,” said Captain Tyler Owen of HCSO.
The Sheriff’s Office says on November 27 at about 5:15 pm, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office dispatch began receiving 911 calls regarding a hunting accident involving an 11-year-old girl. Further calls determined that a father had accidentally shot his 11-year-old daughter with a high-powered rifle at a hunting lease near Young and Hickey Road, in Hallsville.
Once HCSO Deputies and Emergency Medical Services units arrived on the scene, they located an 11-year-old gunshot victim with life-threatening injuries. EMS care flight was requested, but all emergency helicopters were grounded in the region due to inclement weather. The 11-year-old was transported by EMS and escorted by HCSO, Hallsville PD, and Texas DPS to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. After lifesaving efforts were administered, the 11-year-old girl died.
An HCSO Investigator and Crime Scene Investigator responded along with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden to complete a thorough investigation. HCSO and TPWD will conduct this investigation jointly due to the incident involving hunting.
Sheriff Fletcher stated, “Anytime a young person loses their life, it’s tragic for all involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends during this difficult time.”
