Whataburger fans wait in long lines for out-of-state opening

Earlier this month, Whataburger released the list of locations and planned opening dates for its first stores across the Kansas City area. On Monday, the first of these locations opened in Lee’s Summit at 11 a.m. Posts on social media detailed the moments leading up to the grand opening, the first customers served and more.

One Twitter user said “they won’t let anyone camp out for the grand opening of the new @Whataburger in Lee’s Summit until they open at 11.”

They won’t let anyone camp out for the grand opening of the new @Whataburger in Lee’s Summit until they open at 11. 😭

In a tweet, Katharine Finnerty, a digital producer at KSHB 41 News, said the first customer received 52 free Whataburgers and was “completely surprised by the gift basket and free burgers.”

.@Jackie_Tiger is getting 52 free Whataburgers for being the first customer.

Some photos and videos on social media showed long lines at the location.

The line of cars outside @Whataburger for the grand opening of its @cityofLS restaurant. First in the metro. This is the view of Douglas Street, @LSPDPIO has blocked off one southbound lane specifically for Whataburger customers. I don’t see @PatrickMahomes’s car…yet— Charlie Keegan (@CharlieKeegan41) November 15, 2021

Another Twitter user said they arrived at the Whataburger location at approximately 8 a.m.

Got here early this morning and now about to enter the first @Whataburger in the #KansasCity metro in @cityofLS! More pics with the food to come! #WhataburgerInKC— Michael Portman (@MichaelWPortman) November 15, 2021

One Twitter user used to occasion to pass along secret menu recommendations.

#KansasCity people. The best thing to order at #Whataburger isn’t even on the menu. Ask them for a grilled chicken melt. It’s a large breast piece with melted pepper jack cheese, sauteed onions and green peppers. It’s awesome.— Gary Hamilton (@Hamilton2R) November 13, 2021
