DPS update on bicyclist killed after driver strikes group heading from California-Florida

LIBERTY COUNTY — Texas Department of Public Safety troopers are investigating a collision in which a driver crashed into a group of pedal-cyclists traveling from California to Florida, killing one and injuring two others.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates on Saturday, October 30 at 11:06 a.m., the driver of a 2014 Ford Escape was traveling east on Farm-to-Market 787 in Liberty County when the driver failed to control his speed and struck three pedal cyclists traveling in an annual ride from California to Florida.

The driver of the Ford, 66-year-old Michael J. Weaver of Votaw in Hardin County, wasn’t hurt.


The rider of bicycle #1, 51-year-old Kent Joshua Wospeka of South Hamilton, Massachusetts, was airlifted to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont in critical condition. On October 31 at about 1:20 p.m., Wospeka died. Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr. has ordered an autopsy.

The rider of bicycle #2, 59-year-old Barbara Anne Ferrell of Santa Rosa, California, was airlifted to Kingwood Emergency Hospital in Kingwood in serious condition.

The rider of bicycle #3, 54–year-old Elizabeth Anne O’Brien of South Hamilton, Massachusetts, was airlifted to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont in serious condition.

This is an ongoing investigation and there is no additional information available for release at this time.

PREVIOUS DPS REPORT – A caravan of six bicyclists traveling east on FM 787 in north Liberty County was hit by a car at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday morning sending two riders by Life Flight and another by ground transport to area hospitals.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Texas Department of Public Safety, which is the lead investigative agency, in the wreck scene.


All information regarding the identity of the injured riders and their condition will be forthcoming from DPS.

Preliminary information given by Sheriff’s Patrol Cpl. James W. McQueen was that six bicyclists were eastbound on FM 787 participating in an annual ride from San Diego, Calif., with final destination being St. Augustine, Fla., when what is thought to be a Ford Focus struck the line of cyclists. Two were medically airlifted to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont and a third victim transported to Kingwood Hospital.

At this early stage of the investigation, DPS is still working the scene and further details will be provided by that agency.
