COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A nearly 7-hour long standoff came to an end Sunday night at an apartment complex in College Station following a shooting incident that sent one person to the hospital.
Police say around 10:00 p.m. the “suspect was safely detained”.
College Station PD says all residents can now return to their homes and a heavy law enforcement presence will remain on the scene as the investigation progresses.
No other details about the end of the standoff were immediately available.
Police say a man called 911 around 3:30 p.m. and said he was shot inside one of the apartments at the Lake Walk at Traditions complex in the 8100 block of Atlas Pear Drive. Police say the gunman was isolated to one apartment and they worked for several hours to take the suspect into custody.
At 6:20 p.m. police told residents of building 4 to shelter in place inside their apartments and lock doors. Residents in other nearby buildings were also evacuated as a precaution. Police said residents of buildings 5, 6, and 7 could enter through the back entrance from Turkey Creek Road to get to their apartment and then remain indoors.
Just before 8:30 p.m. News 3′s Andy Krauss reported hearing 3 to 5 loud bangs coming from the complex.
College Station police said the gunman in this situation was barricaded inside an apartment and police along with SWAT and negotiators were attempting to end this situation peacefully. Police from Texas A&M Police and Bryan police were also on the scene assisting with the situation.
Sources tell KBTX the man who was shot suffered several gunshot wounds and was taken by a medical helicopter to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The helicopter was sent to the scene and landed in a cul-de-sac alongside one of the buildings at the complex.
Several residents inside the apartment complex have been communicating with KBTX and some of them said they evacuated to the leasing office. Some but not all residents say they received text messages from the leasing office alerting them of the situation. Others received a reserve 911 notification from authorities. Photos of the scene showed several law enforcement agencies on scene and officers with weapons drawn scattered across the complex.
No word yet on who the gunman is or a motive for the shooting incident. It’s also unclear if anyone else was involved in the situation.
