Iola schools lifting precautionary lockdown as deputies investigate man with a gun nearby

IOLA, Texas (KBTX) – The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of a man with a gun along Highway 39 near Iola school but so far nobody has been located and there’s no immediate threat to anyone in the area, Sheriff Don Sowell confirms.

The school district was placed on a precautionary lockdown for a short time but announced later that it would be lifting its lockdown and allowing students to leave.

Law enforcement will remain at and near the school as the investigation continues.

Sheriff Sowell said deputies had received reports earlier in the afternoon of a man with a rifle but the person has not been located. Several people and utility workers in the area said they never heard any shots being fired.

Deputies are still searching the area and investigating.
