A female student is recovering from injuries after being unknowingly shot in the leg during a sub-varsity football game on Thursday night at East Chambers High School.
Deputies with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Patients ER in reference to a juvenile with a wound to the leg. At the time, the student, as well as her friends, family and faculty did not realize that the injury was the result of a gun shot. The wound was soon determined to be from a .22 caliber bullet.
After interviewing the student at the hospital, detectives and other sheriff’s office officials returned to Buccaneer Stadium to search for any evidence and further examine the crime scene.
According to Sheriff Brian Hawthorne, initial investigations show the incident is the result of a stray bullet fired from a distance from the south or southeast direction of the stadium. No reported gun shots were heard at the stadium or in the immediate area around the East Chambers High School campus.
The victim is expected to make a full recovery from her injury.
“The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office will investigate this incident as thoroughly as possible,” Hawthorne said. “Although it is believed that this incident is the result of careless use of a firearm, we will pursue charges on whoever is responsible for this senseless act.”
Anyone with information in reference to the incident is urged to contact the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office at 409-267-2534. Information leading to prosecution in the case may result in a cash reward by calling Crime Stoppers at (844) 860-8477.
Thursday’s sub-varsity game was played between East Chambers and Anahuac. The two schools will play their varsity game as originally scheduled on Friday night at Panthers Stadium in Anahuac.
