State troopers arrest Nederland police officer

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the accident at approximately 6:15 p.m. where a 2011 Toyota passenger car was traveling eastbound on Riley Fuzzel when it veered of the roadway and struck a metal pole.

A Nederland police officer has been arrested for driving while intoxicated, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Nederland Police Department asked the DPS’ highway patrol division on Monday to assist with the DWI investigation, according to a DPS news release.

A Nederland PD officer around 10 p.m. stopped a driver for a traffic violation and suspected the driver, 34-year-old Byrun Perry, of Beaumont, may have been intoxicated, the release said.

“Perry was arrested for driving while intoxicated by Troopers, and at the time of his arrest, was employed by the Nederland Police Department,” the release said.

Chief Gary Porter confirmed Perry still is employed by the Nederland Police Department as a patrol officer. Perry has been with the department for five years.

“He will be placed on administrative leave until we conduct an investigation and decide how we move forward from here,” Porter said.

No further information was immediately available due to press time.
