Orange County Restaurant Reports

Orange County Health Inspector James Scales went to 44 food establishments during August and found some places with foods at improper temperatures. Some had mold problems and one had gnats.

The lowest score was a 72 to Kajun Seafood and Wings on Park Avenue in Orange and Mustang Express on Interstate 10 had a 73.

Fifteen places, including schools, had perfect scores of 100. Businesses with perfect scores were LaQuinta Inns on Highway 62 in Orange, SETX Nutrition on Highway 12 in Mauriceville, Do You Charcuterie on North Main Street in Vidor, Healthy Ways Cafe on North Main in Vidor, Bobcat Nutrition on FM 5572 in Orangefield, and Milano’s Italian Grill on Texas Avenue in Bridge City.

Schools with perfect scores were Bridge City Middle, Orangefield High, Orangefield Elementary, Orangefield Junior High, Pine Forest Elementary in Vidor, Vidor Junior High, Vidor Elementary, Oak Forest Elementary in Vidor, Little Cypress Elementary.

Scores and demerits are:

Kajun Seafood and Wings II, 1102 West Park Avenue in Orange: 72. Inspector ordered immediate repairs on outside grease trap overflowing. Cut onions were not at proper temperatures. Fried shrimp, pre-cooked chicken thighs, and uncooked dead crawfish were not at safe temperatures. No record was kept on keeping cooked foods out at room temperature. Foods inside reach-in cooler need to be covered. Dishes were not sanitized at the three-compartment sink. Bare hands without gloves were used to handle cooked foods. Dates needed on produce inside freezers and  coolers.  Paper towels needed at handwashing station. Outside of equipment needed to be cleaned. Vent-a-Hood system needed to be cleaned. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Current food permit and current certified food manager certificates not posted. 

Mustang Express, 7120 Interstate 10 in Orange: 73. Inspector ordered immediate repairs for hot water, reach-in and walk-in coolers, and handwashing station in deli. Fried chicken wings were not at safe temperature. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Deli department had molded bread and fruits. Foods inside coolers needed to be covered. Dishes in the deli section were not being sanitized. Store did not have hot water. Motor in walk-in cooler was dripping water. Lots of standing water was inside reach-in cooler and dripping onto floor. Dates were needed on products in coolers. Deli department did not have handwashing sink. Drinks were stored on floor. Floor tiles were broken or missing. Employee restrooms needed to be cleaned and sanitized.  Employee restroom needed paper towels. Current health inspection report not posted in front.

Texas Country Store, 3701 16th Street in Orange: 80.  Milk inside a walk-in cooler was not at safe temperate. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Drink  dispenser and inside of cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned.  Employee restroom did not have hot water. Store address needed on bags of ice being sold. Walk-in cooler not keeping proper temperature (inspector ordered immediate repairs). Paper towels needed in employee restroom.  Drinks were stored on the floor. Ceiling tiles were damaged or missing. Floors needed to be cleaned. Current health report not posted in front.

The Donut Palace, 5603 North 16th Street in Orange: 83. Sausage and boudin kolaches were not a safe temperatures. No record was kept on how long they were left at room temperature. Mold was inside ice machine. Employee was washing hands with gloves still on. Dates were needed on products inside coolers. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Vent-a-Hood area and outside of equipment needed to be cleaned.  Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.

Mi Casa Mexican Grill, 110 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 85. Cooked chicken and onions were not at safe temperatures. Foods inside coolers and freezers needed to be covered and dated. Employee was eating and using personal cell phone in kitchen. Bags of onions were stored on the floor inside walk-in cooler.  Outside equipment, along with storage shelves, vents and Vent-a-Hood, and walls needed to be cleaned. Floor tiles were broken or missing, especially in dishwashing area.

The Donut Shop, 1125 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 86. Sausage, boudin, and raw shelled eggs were not at safe temperatures and no record of time was kept on how long they had been out at room temperature. Raw dough was stored in plastic grocery bags in the freezer. Dates needed on products inside freezers and coolers. Same pan liner was used multiple times to bake kolaches. Entire Vent-a-Hood system needed to be cleaned. Floors, walls, and vents needed to be cleaned.

Pakco, 3031 Highway 12 in Vidor: 90. Mold was inside ice machine and slushy machine.  Drinks were stored on  floor. Dates needed on products inside coolers. Paper towels needed inside employee restroom. Store name and address needed on bags of ice being sold. Current food service permit and current health inspection not posted.

Texas Snostorms, 2202 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 92. Plumbing under three-compartment sinks dripping water from pipes. Dates needed on products in coolers and freezers. Hair restraints needed. Employee had improper jewelry. Walls needed to be cleaned of mold and sanitized. Current food service permit and current health inspection not posted.

Wienerschnitzel, 2420 MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst: 92. Cut onions and uncooked corndogs not at safe temperatures. Inspector ordered immediate repairs on reach-in cooler because it was not keeping safe temperature. Cutting boards needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Floor grout was missing. Current health inspection report and certified food manager certificates were not posted.

Sweet Bee Boutique, 2637 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 93. Foods stored on dry storage shelf needed to be covered. Hot water needed to be at a higher temperature for dish washing.  Handwashing station was blocked with clothing.

Market Basket, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Paper towels were needed at handwashing station inside meat department. Storage shelves inside dairy walk-in cooler  needed to be cleaned.

Market Basket Deli, 2005 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Dates needed on products on sales floor. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned. Damaged and missing ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.

Golden Chick, 1716 16th Street in Orange: 95. Store was using styrofoam as ice scoop at drive-through. Hair restraints needed. Employees had improper jewelry, container of flour was left open next to handwashing sink. Current food manager certificates and food service permit not posted.

Alleys Kitchen, 915 FM 1131 in Vidor: 95. Cooked chicken was not at safe temperature. Dates were needed on products inside cooler.

Texas Country Store, 1805 Texas Avenue in Bridge City:  95. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Paper towels needed inside employee restroom. Current health inspection not posted. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be repaired.

Orange Nutrition, 1301 Green Avenue in Orange: 95. Establishment did not have sanitizer. Dates were needed on products inside coolers and freezers.

Dairy Queen, 780 North Main Street in Vidor: 95. Foods  inside reach-in freezers needed to be covered. Door to walk-in freezer had ice build-up and was not closing properly. Inspector ordered immediate repair.

Blackbeard’s on the Gulf, 2450 FM 1131 in Vidor: 96. Raw chicken was stored improperly inside reach-in cooler. Dish room needed to be cleaned and organized.

Woogie’s Sandwiches, 535 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Dates needed on products inside coolers. Vents at Vent-a-Hood needed to be cleaned.

Lom’s  Seafood, 2507 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 97.  Raw squid was stored improperly inside reach-in cooler.

Brick and Barley, 2614 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 97. Paper towels were needed at handwashing station. Several gnats were found.

CVS, 1295 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves.

B.A.R.E. Nutrition, 10335 Highway 12 in Mauriceville: 98. Dates needed on products inside coolers.

Shiver Shack, 6928 Highway 87 North in Orange: 98. Dates needed on products inside coolers.

Redeemed Coffee Shop, 1212 North Main Street in Vidor: 99. Outside of cabinets needed to be cleaned.

Pirate Nutrition, 445 West Freeway in Vidor: 99. Drinks  were stored on floor.

Champagne Charcuterie, 1140 North Main Street in Vidor: 99. Foods were stored on floor.
