Firefighters from five different fire departments battled a Wednesday morning house fire in Newton County which has been labeled as suspicious. It happened shortly after daybreak on Farm to Market Road 1012 in the Jamestown Community.

Burkeville Fire Chief Charles Duckworth said a 911 caller reported smoke coming from the attic of a 2-story house, which he said had been vacant for sometime and the electricity shut off.

Duckworth said when firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the roof and the blaze pretty much destroyed the attic and second floor.

The Burkeville, Newton, Trout Creek, East End, and Jasper Fire Departments all worked together to tap out the flames.
