JEFFERSON COUNTY — August was the deadliest month of the pandemic to date for Jefferson County.
During August, Jefferson County reported a total of 82 COVID-related deaths, with 52 in Beaumont. Praphul Joshi, associate professor at Lamar University, calls the latest trends alarming.
“We are seeing more and more cases in the younger population and it’s also being more severe among all age groups,” said Joshi.
More than half of the deaths reported in August were men and women below 65. About 10% were in their thirties.
Lack of vaccinations among younger age groups is one of the biggest reasons health experts say the county is seeing not only a surge in cases, but deaths.
At last check – only 44.9% of the population in Jefferson County is fully vaccinated. About 56% has had at least one dose.
