HUNTSVILLE, Texas (KBTX) – The suspect of a shooting that left a teen dead in Huntsville has been apprehended, according to the Huntsville Police Department.

Tiezevion Lazaro Matthews was located in an apartment in Huntsville, according to police. He was arrested and taken to the Walker County Jail.

According to police, around 7:15 p.m., on Aug. 24, a suspect fired numerous shots into a vehicle near MLK and Thomason Street, hitting the passenger.

After the victim was shot, the driver of the vehicle then drove to Eastham Thomason Park and called the police.

When police arrived on the scene they began performing first aid until EMS arrived. The victim was taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

“I would like thank the numerous community members who have reached out during this difficult time. Officers from many agencies have worked nearly non stop since this tragedy occurred. I appreciate each and every one for their tireless efforts,” said Chief Kevin Lunsford.

On Wednesday, the principal of Huntsville High School issued the following statement to the district:

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that HHS has suffered the loss of a student as a result of an incident that occurred last night off-campus. As a way to support our students and staff, I requested additional resources such as law enforcement presence on campus and grief counseling from HISD staff, Region 6, and Tri-County for our students and staff. We will continue to provide this support throughout the day to ensure that we provide our students and staff what they need during this time. Please keep our students and staff in your thoughts and prayers as this is a difficult time for teenagers and staff who work with these young people.”
