MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Tennessee and Arkansas transportation officials released photos of the fracture found on the I-40 Hernando DeSoto Bridge.
Initially described as a “crack”, the broken beam was discovered during a routine inspection Tuesday, according to the Tennessee and Arkansas Departments of Transportation.
Tennessee and Arkansas split responsibility for the bridge.
Bridge and river traffic were shut down Tuesday. As of Wednesday, officials said it could be days or weeks until inspections are complete. They’re working to determine if the bridge can withstand the weight of vehicular traffic.
The fractured beam is on the bottom side of the truss in the middle of the bridge.
