A section of the Interstate 10 access road in Beaumont was closed for more than an hour Wednesday morning after reports that an armed man had run into a local business.
Two hours after the report first came in, he surrendered to Beaumont Police Department SWAT.
The report first came in around 10:10 a.m. regarding a man with a gun in a business in the 1200 block of Interstate 10 near College Street.
SWAT was called to the Enterprise Rent-A-Car about an hour after the initial report. Around 11:55 a.m., the man came out of the building, Morrow said.
Police spokesperson Haley Morrow said no employees were injured, and the man did not fire the weapon during the incident.
“The suspect exited the building and surrendered to officers…with his hands up, which is what we always hope for,” she said.
Police searched the building after the man surrendered to make sure there weren’t any other people inside.
Officers are not sure what led the man to enter the business with a firearm.
“It doesn’t appear to be a former employee,” Morrow said. “It appears to be just random.”
Police had the I-10 College Street exit blocked off and were rerouting cars northbound on the I-10 access road to 11th Street.
