Jasper Dogs clobber the Carthage Dogs

On Tuesday evening, the Carthage Bulldogs traveled to Jasper for a district match up against our local Bulldogs. The contest lived up to its billing of a “DAWG FIGHT” from the very beginning. Jasper, needing a win to improve their standings in the district race, battled Carthage throughout the night.

Carthage struck early scoring two runs on two hits off of Jasper’s starting pitcher Drew Marshall in the first inning. Carthage added one more run in the second inning with two additional hits. Down 3 – 0, Jasper scored in the bottom of the second inning on a lead off double by Marco Escalante. Two outs later Sophomore Kayden Caraway singled and drove in Escalante making the score 3 – 1.

In the fourth inning, Brock Lackey entered the game replacing Seth Ross and doubled putting himself in scoring position. Grayson Williams draws a walk putting Jasper runners on first and second base. Caraway again steps in to bat, grounds out to second base and collected his second RBI as Lackey scores on the play. This brings the score to 3 -2 with Carthage still leading.

Jasper breaks the game wide open in the sixth inning scoring 7 runs on only one hit.

Several errors by the Carthage defenders and pitching control issues gave Jasper the lead by a score of 9 – 3.

Drew Marshall reached his limit of 110 pitches after completing one out in the sixth inning. Grayson Williams enters in relief and promptly retires the next two batters. Williams continued pitching in the seventh and final inning allowing one run after getting two quick outs. With Carthage having the bases loaded, Williams hit a Carthage batter with a pitch forcing in that single run. Taking no chances, Coach Stephen Westbrook called on Sophomore Hudson Faircloth in relief. Faircloth throws one pitch and gets the last Carthage batter to fly out to the outfield forthe end of the game.

Jasper defeated Carthage by the final score of 9 – 4.

Jasper improved their standing in district play with a record of two wins and three losses. Carthage now has the same district record of two wins and three losses.

In the earlier game, the Jasper Junior Varsity was defeated by the Carthage Junior Varsity by a final score of 11 – 2. The Jasper JV record is now one win and four tosses in district play.

Jasper will travel to Carthage Thursday evening, April 15 (a schedule change) to once again try and defeat Carthage, at their home turf. Expect another “DAWG FIGHT” in this contest to see which team will prevail and improve their standing in district play.

KJAS will bring you the live broadcast of the Varsity game with the pregame beginning at approximately 6:50 pm.
